Food is a Drug

by Chip Gibbons

A fun and thoughtful tune based on a blues structure. (2013)

Food is a Drug
©2013 Chip Gibbons (ASCAP)

It's a bad day, nothing goes right
You got no strength to put up a fight
One thing you need, one thing can satisfy
You gotta get more to eat, or feel like you'll die

In the land of the rich, the land of plenty
The poor have none, when you've got twenty
The amount doesn't count when you're addicted it's never enough
You live in paradise, but your life is feeling tough

Neon lights flash, all-you-can-eat
When you get the urge it's a one-way street
Hot fudge sundae, whipped cream with a cherry on top
It's automatic, once you start, you can't stop

All around the world, wars and people dying
Deadly pollution, hungry children crying
Lovers and bankers have left you feeling screwed
One thing's guaranteed to lift your mood--food

Your doctor says you gotta go on a diet
All your emotions protest and riot
Cravings have got you in their control
Nothing you eat will fill the hole in your soul
